Fourteen New York City police officers suffered smoke inhalation while evacuating a burning apartment building Tuesday night.
More than 100 FDNY firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze that broke out just before midnight on the second and third floors of a building in the Bronx, WNBC-TV reports. It took crews about an hour to control the flames.
Police rushed into the smoke-filled building and went door-by-door to make sure residents had escaped. Fourteen of those officers were treated at a local hospital along with one to two civilians, authorities told WNBC.
The fire displaced two families, and its cause is under investigation.
