Tire Fire Fills Savannah Sky

Savannah, GA -- On August 5, one of the hottest days to date in Savannah, Metro 911 center was notified of a large open-area fire by a SCMPD officer conducting a nearby traffic stop. Communications alerted Southside Station 12 to the 5500 block of Ogeechee Road. Once out of the station M-12 advised heavy black smoke in the sky and advised to fill the box, bringing in engine 10 and Garden City Fire.

Savannah, GA -- On August 5, one of the hottest days to date in Savannah, Metro 911 center was notified of a large open-area fire by a SCMPD officer conducting a nearby traffic stop.

Communications alerted Southside Station 12 to the 5500 block of Ogeechee Road. Once out of the station M-12 advised heavy black smoke in the sky and advised to fill the box, bringing in engine 10 and Garden City Fire.

Engine 12 and M-12 arrived to find a large pile of tires on fire with extension into nearby brush and begun laying hand lines through the thick vegetation. Command was established and immediately requested additional resources to assist to bring the massive fire under control. Tankers from Southside and Garden City began arriving along with CEMA, Georgia Forestry and several Southside Divisions.

Engines 7 and 11 moved up to fill the response area. Throughout the incident, firefighters rotated out through rehab since the tempature was reading 107. Crews prevented the fire from advancing to nearby mobile homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
