Transformer Explosion, Car Fire in New Milford, New Jersey

The River Edge Fire Department was dispatched about 5:15 pm, on July 06, 2006 for a report of a transformer explosion with wires down.

As Chief David Stucke (Car 1-0) was approaching the scene in informed incoming companies that the wires landed on top of a car and started to burn the pavement. Within a few minutes the car caught fire and then became fully involved. The gas main directly under the burning wires ruptured and started burning through the road.

Chief Stucke requested PSE&G to expedite the response of gas and electric crews to the scene. Mutual aid companies from New Milford and Oradell were called in to help protect exposures until the utilities were cut off before the fire could be put out.

The area was closed to traffic for about 5 hours and no injuries were reported.
