On April 5, 2004 at approximately 0100 hours a fire occurred at 5800 N Pulaski on the city's far north side.

First due engine 89 reported heavy fire in an industrial type building and asked for the box.

The fire went to a 5-11 alarm, with 1 special call for 4 engines plus numerous requests for additional tower ladders, trucks, Battalion Chiefs and reserve snorkel.

Companies had to go with in line operations to cover extremely long distances from the available hydrants. The fire spread rapidly to a self-storage occupancy and a similar warehouse.

Once a good water supply was established, numerous master streams stopped the fire from spreading to other exposures.

Note: Deputy Commissioner Nolan was to retire on the morning of this incident. This was his last night of fire duty as the "3-11 Duty Chief.
