On Wednesday, July 5th, Chesterfield County (VA) Fire & EMS (CFEMS) units were dispatched to Chippenham Parkway for a motor vehicle accident.

On arrival, the Tactical Safety Officer and Battalion 1 found a head-on vehicle accident with significant damage to two passenger cars.

The scene assessment showed one red patient trapped in a vehicle against the median wall and a second yellow patient who was ambulatory and had removed himself from his crushed car.

Personnel from CFEMS Truck 3 began to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the trapped occupant. They were assisted by Engine 3 and Ambulance 3 from the Bensley station and Ambulance 11 from the Dale station.

Due to the position of the vehicles and debris field, the highway was shut down for approximately 30 minutes.

Virginia State Police investigated the accident and determined that one of the drivers was traveling the wrong direction on the limited access highway.

Both patients were transported by ground to the level one trauma center at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia campus.
