Camden, New Jersey, Firefighters and Haz Mat Crews Assist EMS

Shortly after 12 noon on March 5, 2004, Camden City Engine Co. 9 was dispatched to assist Camden EMS Units in the 3100 block of Federal Street in the East Camden section of the City.

Shortly after 12 noon on March 5, 2004, Camden City Engine Co. 9 was dispatched to assist Camden EMS Units in the 3100 block of Federal Street in the East Camden section of the City. Captain Steve Kinky along with Fire Fighters C. Baker, K. Lewis, M. Miller of Engine Co. 9 arrived and were informed by EMS Members that they had a very large male that had to be transported but they had an unusual serious health problem at the residence.

A Special Call was placed for Battalion 2, Chief Darryl Lewison, to respond. Upon his arrival he was informed that the male patient was found lying in bed and was covered with human waste and vomit for over a week. Chief Lewison placed a Special Call for Camden Rescue 1 which is equipped with full HazMat gear. Rescue 1 Captain Frank Sandrock along with Fire Fighters G. Lyons, E. Stratton, A. Figueroa and J. Tull arrived and were informed of the conditions.

Captain Sandrock broke out the Tyveks Level B Suits for all fire fighters and EMS Personnel. Fire Fighters also suited up with SCBA's. After a briefing from Chief Lewison and Camden's EMS, members entered the dwelling and removed the very large male patient. He was then transported to Cooper Medical Center. Engine 9's members used a water line with detergent to wash down the members before returning to service.
