2-Alarm Fire Destroys Coventry, Rhode Island Home

Late in the evening of March 3, 2004, Coventry, Rhode Island firefighters responded to a reported house fire on Ames Street, which is located in the Harris District of the town.

Late in the evening of March 3, 2004, Coventry, Rhode Island firefighters responded to a reported house fire on Ames Street, which is located in the Harris District of the town.

Harris firefighters arrived to find a heavy smoke and fire condition, and immediately requested a second alarm.

An occupant of the house reported that he was using the computer when all of the lights went out. He then noticed smoke coming from an electrical socket and the house was evacuated.

Firefighters on scene were having a difficult time containing the fire because they were reporting "Collyer's Mansion" type conditions. Crews were eventually withdrawn from the structure and a defensive effort was begun.

It took mutual aid from several districts in Coventry, as well as surrounding towns, several hours to control the blaze. At least two people were transported the the hospital, their injuries are unknown. The cause of the fire is under investigation by local and state officials.
