On Saturday January 24, 2004, fire ripped through a two and a half story wood frame at 87 Ford St in the Old Wayne section of Wayne Township. The fire was reported at 1:40pm and appears to have started on the first floor and quickly spread to the upper floors.

Firefighters had a difficult time extinguishing the blaze due to the frigid temperatures and the location of the house off the roadway, making it difficult to set up ladder trucks to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were forced to use three hand lines and one deck gun to knock down the fire.

An 81-year-old male resident, and one firefighter were transported to area hospitals and treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not believed to be suspicious. Firefighters from Wayne fire companies 1,2, and 5 spent two hours bringing the fire under control.
