Elizabeth, New Jersey Firefighters Battle 2- Alarm Ship Fire

On January 13, 2006, at 2:31 pm, Elizabeth Fire Department (EFD) transmitted a full assignment (BOX # 6833) to Berth 96 at the Sealand Terminal in Port Elizabeth.

Units arrived on scene to find smoke showing from a container ship. DC-4 arrived on scene and struck the Signal 11.

Three lines were stretched by the ship's crew but made little progress knocking down the fire. Additional lines were stretched by EFD as the 2nd Alarm was struck at 3pm. DC Wirkus arrived on scene and coordinated fire fighting operations aboard the ship "Horizon Hawaii."

A foam task force was requested bringing Bayway Refinary Foam Tower Ladder, Millburn Foam Tender, Linden E-4 & Union E-1 to the scene.

Foam ops were set up knocking down the fire.

The fire involved insulation in the conatainer area of the ship. EFD Tech Rescue Team had to sure up a container that was wedged aboard the ship so that the area that was involved in fire could be checked for extension.

Mutual Aid Engines from Westfield, Rahway, Springfield and Cranford Truck-1 were special called and worked on scene. PAPD ESU, NJSP OEM, Union County HAZMAT, Elizabeth Police Department, State Division of Fire Safety, New Jersey Fire Marshall's Office, Elizabeth EMS, UMDNJ EMS & EFD Canteen Unit all worked on scene.
