On December 13, 2003, at approximately 9:30 am, the Old Mystic Fire Department was dispatched to a two-vehicle MVA, at Interstate 95, southbound, between exits 89 and 88.

Upon arrival, the crew of Rescue 67, Engine 62, Engine 61, and Engine 33 found one vehicle off the road and the second vehicle on its roof. The driver of the first vehicle presented minor injuries and was transported immediately. The driver of the second vehicle was pinned upside down, and his head, only about 4 inches from the road, presented a large avulsion of his scalp.

Although this was an extreme challenging extrication, the crew from the Old Mystic Fire Department was able to extricate the driver in less than 35 minutes, and placed him in the helicopter (LifeStar).
