39 Condo units were destroyed by an early morning fire that broke out at 1:33am on 12/3/03. Wind driven flames quickly spread to seven of the eight buildings in the complex, which were all wood frame with vinyl siding and no sprinklers.

First arriving companies from Avalon Vol. Fire Dept. found two buildings fully involved, and seven buildings were involved in less than one hour. The fire went to Ten Alarms and special called six EMS squads. Only six occupants were at home at the time of the fire, all of whom escaped. No serious injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The Avalon Vol. Fire Dept. had moderate damage to both its engines and snorkel from radiant heat, estimating the department's losses at approximately $150,000. Estimated property losses range from 25 to 35 million.
