Lodi, New Jersey - Sometime around 3pm, the Lodi Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a fire in the attic at 41 Union Street (the American Legion Hall).

Police on the scene reported a heavy smoke condition pushing form the attic area. The call was then re-sent as a "working fire" and the Chief transmitted a second alarm upon his arrival.

Companies tried to make an interior attack, but were held back by the extreme fire conditions, and the risk of possible collapse.

Companies were then ordered to switch from an interior attack to an exterior attack.

Forty minutes after the initial alarm, the rear section of the roof collapsed. After about 90 minutes of "surround and drown" operations, the fire was placed under control with extensive overhaul.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
