On the morning of December 12, 2005, the Kennebunkport Fire Department was dispatched to assist a small moose that had become stuck in the ice off of Old Cape Road.

Firefighters joined Kennebunkport Police and Highway Department personnel in the rescue attempt. The moose appeared uninjured, but exhausted from his efforts to extricate himself, and he offered no resistance to the rescue team.

Using a rope and some manpower, rescuers were able to free the animal from the shallow, ice-covered pond and guide him to safer ground.

The baby bull moose, estimated to be about a year old, rested for awhile before departing the scene at a leisurely pace.
