CARVER, MASS - A 78-year-old man perished in an explosion and fire at the mobile home park where he resided. Carver Firefighters were confronted with heavy fire conditions upon arrival and neighbors said the homeowner was still inside.

Firefighters responding to the 12:27 a.m. fire removed a badly burned body from the rear bedroom of the mobile home at 18 Lincoln Circle where the occupant lived alone.

The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation. Neighbors said the occupant used oxygen equipment and was a heavy smoker.

Neighbors said the occupant had an oxygen-generating system, as well as a number of oxygen storage containers in the home.

Forty-seven Carver firefighters using three engines, a tanker, a rescue and several support vehicles were used at the fire. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. Firefighters put forth a tremendous effort to keep surrounding properties from sustaining any damage.
