In the early morning hours of October 31, 2003, Newark Fire Headquarters began receiving calls for a building fire at the corner of Clark and Mt. Pleasant. A "full" box went out in the 3rd Battalion with the report of one person trapped on the roof.

Engine 9 arrived to find a fire on the first floor of a 3 story brick/duplex with two people trapped on the second floor. The building was the scene of previous fires and had holes in the floors and no interior stairs. The victims were removed via ladders.

Primary and secondary searches turned out negative for any other victims. As conditions deteriorated, the Deputy transmitted the second alarm. Shortly after the arrival of the second alarm companies, the Deputy ordered the evacuation of structure and a roll call was taken.

After all members were accounted for companies re-entered the building for final extinguishment and overhaul. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
