Several Rescued from Providence, Rhode Island Apartment Fire

On November 1, 2003 members of the Providence, Rhode Island Fire Department were dispatched to the Kilmartin Plaza Apartments on Benedict Avenue in the city's west end.

Engine 8 arrived and transmitted the "Code Red," the department's signal for a working fire.

Heavy smoke conditions were present on the fire floor as well as the floors above and several residents had to be evacuated. One man was discovered in a stairwell with trouble breathing and removed to a rescue.

At one point, Engine 14 reported that a woman was hanging out of a window on the 5th floor and threatening to jump. Interior crews were directed to her apartment and she was removed via an interior stairwell.

A second alarm was requested to assist with searches.

Several people were treated on scene and at least two firefighters were transported to local hospitals for evaluation.

It took approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.
