The Oceanside fire department received calls for smoke coming from the town of Hempstead, NY, dump located off long beach road.

On Monday September 8th 2003, the Oceanside fire department received calls for smoke coming from the town of Hempstead, NY, dump located off long beach road.

A large amount of garbage was on fire that communicated to the building. A working fire was ordered by the chief of Oceanside John Traverso.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles and a large amount of mutual aid was used to the scene from surrounding towns. Traffic was in a knot due to long stretches across a main road leading from long beach.

All fire fighting operations lasted 3 hours.
