Verona, Va. - On September 30th, companies from the Verona Volunteer Fire Company, Augusta County Fire Department, Weyers Cave Volunteer Fire Company, and the City of Staunton, were dispatched just after 9am for a report of a fire in a restaurant.

Augusta County, Deputy Chief Astarb arrived on scene minutes after dispatch to report fire through the roof of a one story restaurant.

Deputy Chief Astarb immediately assumed command and requested a working incident.

The working incident brought two additional Engine Companies from New Hope Volunteer Fire Dept and Preston L. Yancey Volunteer Fire Company.

An aggressive interior attack was initiated, but due to heavy fire and deteriorating conditions in the attic, interior crews were forced to evacuate the structure. After the crews exited the structure, and were accounted for, the decision was made to transition to a defensive attack.

The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour.

The companies remained on scene for several hours for overhaul.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
