New Hyde Park, New York Gas Main Rupture and Fire

Shortly after 10am on Tuesday, September 27, 2005, The New Hyde Park Fire Department was alerted to a report of a gas main rupture and fire on Jericho Turnpike, near Covert Avenue.

Shortly after 10am on Tuesday, September 27, 2005, The New Hyde Park Fire Department was alerted to a report of a gas main rupture and fire on Jericho Turnpike, near Covert Avenue.

Upon arrival New Hyde Park firefighters found themselves confronted with a burning high pressure gas main and the fire had extended to a taxpayer.

Extensive mutual aid was requested as fire now involved the cockloft of the taxpayer.

Numerous towerladders were special called.

Approximately 35 minutes into the operation all members were withdrawn and a collapse of the roof occured.

Gas company crews were able to shut down the main and four towerladders, one ladder pipe and numerous handlines were used to extinguish the fire. One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation.
