Wilmington Fire Department Battle Working Apartment Fire

Wilmington Fire Department firefighters arrived on the scene and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from a third floor apartment.

Wilmington, DE -- Wilmington Fire Department firefighters arrived on the scene and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from a third floor apartment.

The apartment complex is known as the Kennedy Apartments and is run by the Wilmington Housing Authority. The building is a three story brick, apartment building, containing 12 units.

The fire was contained to the original unit with minor smoke and water damage to one other apartment. The occupant and her child discovered the fire in the bedroom and fled the building unharmed. The alarm system activated, alerted the other residents and all escaped unharmed.

Twenty six firefighters fought the fire and brought it under control at 0953 hours. One firefighter was injured. Firefighter Bernard Veney, 45 years of age, a 23 year veteran, assigned to Engine 3 was treated at Wilmington Hospital for a hand injury.

The cause and origin are under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Department Fire Marshal
