This raging house fire in the Village of Hempstead, New York made for a long afternoon battle by local firefighters.
Arriving units found an extremely heavy volume of fire coming from the basement level on arrival, possibly fed by a melted gas line. Attack lines were positioned for a push by the engine companies while truck companies laddered the exterior.
Mutual aid was called from five surrounding towns to assist with the extinguishment.
Nassau County Fire Investigators were summoned to determine a cause.
