Via Flora Apartment Fire Injures One in Florida

One apartment in a two-story building in a senior citizens' community erupted in fire on April 11, 2003.

One apartment in a two-story building in a senior citizens' community erupted in fire on April 11, 2003. The apartment is located at 13976 Via Flora in the Palm Greens development in suburban Delray Beach, Florida.

Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue responded to the early afternoon fire with 28 personnel staffing 3 engines, a quint, 3 rescues, an air & lighting unit and several officers.

First in units, Engine 42 and Rescue-Engine 41, found fire fully involving a second story apartment and extending into the attic space between several others.

Smoke was billowing from the eves of the entire building but the fire was contained to the apartment of origin.

Quint 57 was brought in to ventilate the attic space and check for extension.

One resident in the apartment was treated for minor burn injuries while four pet cats succumbed to the fire. The American Red Cross was brought in to provide food and shelter for the displaced occupants.

The cause of the fire is being determined by Fire-Rescue investigators.
