Calif. Firefighters Battle Cold Storage Fire

The Watsonville Fire Department in Santa Cruz County, Calif. responded to a fire on Weds., April 21 at Apple Growers Ice and Cold Storage. The storage facility is located in the industrial part of the city and dates back to 1928. Initially, firefighters attempted to make entry but were pulled out for safety reasons. Challenges included thickness of the roof for ventilation and accessibilty to the seat of the fire. The fire was upgraded to a multiple alarm fire.

The plan was to let the fire burn itself out and protect the exposures. No firefighters were injured during the operation. More than three million gallons of water were used; estimated damage is 2 million dollars plus. The fire's cause is under investigation.
