Sparky Celebrates His 60th Birthday

March 25, 2011
On Friday March 18,  a fire service icon celebrated his 60th birthday. That may not seem like such a big deal, but in dog years that’s a whopping 420 years! This year Sparky the Firedog, NFPA’s mascot created in 1951, celebrated 60 years of teaching fire safety to children and adults alike. In Rocky Mount, N.C., Sparky celebrated with a luncheon and birthday party hosted by Alterra Sterling House, an assisted living facility for senior adults.

Also on hand for the party were firefighters from the City of Rocky Mount,  N.C. Fire Department and preschoolers from All Smiles Daycare in Rocky Mount. The residents were delighted to share lunch with Sparky and the firefighters and as always, the children were ecstatic to see the fire trucks, talk to the firefighters about fire safety, and share birthday cake with Sparky.

Thanks to the generosity of the staff at Alterra Sterling House, Sparky celebrated his 60th birthday in true iconic fashion. Here’s to many more years of Sparky leading the way in fire safety education. Happy Birthday, Sparky!
