At 2:17 a.m. on March 17, the Brockton Fire Alarm Office received a frantic call reporting a house fire in the city's South End.

Engines 2 and 4, Ladder 2 and Squad A responded with Deputy Chief Murphy as Incident Command. The officer of Engine 2 reported smoke showing from a 2 1/2 woodframe house with a report of someone trapped.

Deputy Murphy requested a Working Fire Assignment, bringing Tower 1 and Engine 5 to the scene. Engine 2's crew quickly found the occupant and removed her to the outside for transport to the hospital, where she died.

The blaze gained headway into the attic and fire broke through the roof, and a Second Alarm was transmitted with Engine 7 responding. Before the fire was under control Brockton Engine 3 and West Bridgewater (Mutal aid) Engine 1 responded to assist in water supply.
