Elgin, Ill. firefighters found heavy smoke pushing through the door, eaves and vents of the home.
Searches showed no one in the residence but on the secondary search, found a Chihuahua that was in its crate. It was OK.
Batt. Chief Terry Bruce attributed that to the dog's size, and the fact that it was very low to the floor of the smoke-filled home.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get a knock on the fire but they were on the scene for over an hour with overhaul.
The home sustained substantial damage from smoke and fire.
