Firefighters responded to a fire in Mount Vernon, New York on March 30, 2003 at 8pm.
A woman, her four children and her sister were inside their home on the third floor when the fire started. Unable to escape down the stairs, they went to the roof where firefighters brought the down with ladders.
Firefighters had the fire under control in an hour and were able to contain the blaze to one house. Six families were displaced.
