Albany Fire responded to several reports of a heavy and smoke condition showing from two vacant buildings around 6 am, Sunday, March 16th.

Upon arrival, crews were confronted by thick smoke and heavy fire conditions.

The blaze started in the alleyway between West Street and North Lake between the two buildings and continued up the back of the porches into the roof area allowing the fire to spread through the buildings.

Efforts turned defensive as the roof got soft and horns blew.

The apartment building and adjoining small house were both vacant after they were closed two days earlier for illegal drug transactions as well as code violations.

Neighboring structures were evacuated.

There were no injuries.
