A stubborn fire at a sprawling 3-story apartment building near the Illinois State University campus kept Normal, Illinois firefighters busy throughout the afternoon and into the night.

Upon arrival at approximately 1:45 p.m., first units indicated fire was showing from a second-story window on the building's east side, facing Normal's City Hall and an Amtrak station.

The fire quickly spread to adjacent apartments and eventually to the roof.

Officials from Illinois State University were on scene to help with housing for the displaced tenants, and American Red Cross volunteers are providing food and water to exhausted firefighters.

A crew will remain on scene through the night, and investigators are expected to begin work Friday morning.
