A serious fire on the upper floors of the Embassy of Malawi caused in excess of $200,000 in damages but no injuries.

Units were dispatched at 10:50 AM for the report of fire coming from the roof of the embassy, located at 2408 Massachusetts Ave., NW. Firefighters found heavy smoke visible on the approach with fire evident.

Engine 1 quickly advanced handlines into the interior of the building to begin an aggressive operation. After locating the fire on the fourth floor, the blaze was knocked down within 30 minutes.

Damage was severe with significant extension into the cockloft and through the roof in several locations.

Fire investigators have determined the cause was the result of a space heater being used and unattended in an office on the top floor.
