At 4:49 p.m. on March 2, 2005 Norfolk, Virginia Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the area of Lexington and Dungee Streets, in the Huntersville section of the city.

A police officer was first on scene and advised he had heavy fire showing from the windows.

Battalion 1 arrived on scene and advised he had (3) two and a half story wood frame dwellings heavily involved and immediately requested a second alarm.

Shortly thereafter, all crews were pulled from the structures and a third alarm was struck.

Fire was contained to the original three structures, with two houses being gutted. The extent of the damage in the third unknown at this time.

There were no injuries reported to civilians or fire department personnel. Fifteen people were left homeless.

The fire was started by a child playing with a lighter, who set a mattress on fire. The child and his grandmother attempted to remove the mattress from the upstairs bedroom, and it flared up on the stairwell.
