Lightning-Sparked Blaze Destroys Ind. Shops

Lightning likely ignited a fire at a strip mall in Carmel that gutted close to a dozen shops, according to WRTV. The fire at the plaza near 106th Street and Michigan Road was reported about 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning. The businesses affected by the blaze included a video store, a restaurant, a wine store and a tanning shop. Carmel Fire Marshal Bruce Knott told the news station that the flames were already shooting through the roof by the time crews arrived.

The fire at the plaza near 106th Street and Michigan Road was reported about 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning.

The businesses affected by the blaze included a video store, a restaurant, a wine store and a tanning shop.

Carmel Fire Marshal Bruce Knott told the news station that the flames were already shooting through the roof by the time crews arrived.

No injuries were reported.

More than 100 people work at the strip mall and its owner told the news station that he hopes to rebuild in 180 days.

The damage to the building is estimated at nearly $3 million, not including all of the merchandise and equipment inside the stores.
