Bridgeport, Connecticut Firefighters Battle Stubborn Structure Fire

Firefighters responded around 8:30 pm to 1003 East Main St., in the city's east side, to find smoke showing from the a three story occupied multiple dwelling.

A still alarm to check a washing machine turned into a stubborn and smokey blaze for city firefighters to battle Thursday night. Firefighters responded around 8:30 pm to 1003 East Main St., in the city's east side, to find smoke showing from the a three story occupied multiple dwelling.

Firefighters attempted an interior attack, but were driven back by heavy smoke and heat conditions in the basement. The building was built in 1888 of brick and heavy timber construction, which made for a deep seated fire.

Firefighters had difficulty finding the fire as it ran the walls and ceilings.

Companies were ordered to evacuate the structure and prepare for defensive operations.

Two additional engines and one truck were special called above the initial assignment to help fight the blaze.

Firefighters placed multiple handlines, multiversals and three ladders into operation as the fire broke out in various areas and heavy smoke billowed throughout the structure.

The fire gained hold of the cockloft and roof around 12:30 am making for a spectacular finish to a long firefight.

It took six engines, three trucks and the rescue 41/2 hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
