A babysitter and three young children escaped serious injury after they fled a burning house at 293 Massachusetts Ave.

The children, two boys, ages 2 and 5, and a girl, age 6 and their 52-year-old babysitter were already out of the house when firefighters arrived. The babysitter, was taken by rescue crews to Rhode Island Hospital because she was complaining of trouble breathing. She was treated and released.

Firefighters from Engine 13 arrived to find the first and second floors of this 2 story wood frame private dwelling well involved. The initial call was received at 11:48am. As firefighters raced to the scene, fire alarm informed them that they had received at least 9 or 10 additional calls reporting the fire. A total of 6 engines, 4 ladders, 1 Special Hazards and 2 Medical Rescues responded to the fire along with the Salvation Army Canteen Unit.

The cause of the blaze had yet to be determined.
