Rochester, N.Y. firefighter battled a three-alarm fire in a vacant factory on Wednesday night.

About 6 p.m., units were called to the old American Laundry factory on Sherer St.

Truck 5 went on scene with fire through the roof of the large one-story building.

Battalion 2 requested a second alarm shortly after, and crews began an exterior attack on the structure using master streams on aerial ladders and handlines on the ground.

A third alarm was called, bringing to more companies as smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

The fire was called under control in about an hour. But units stayed on scene for several hours mopping up hot spots.

Several Rochester companies were special called to the scene to assist crews already on scene.

Brighton, Henrietta and St. Paul Fire Departments were called to cover Rochester stations.

Henrietta provided a fill in to South Ave, St Paul filled in at North Clinton Ave and Brighton filled in at Headquarters.

Department officials have deemed the fire, in the longtime vacant structure, suspicious.
