Dec. 27, 2002
The Salem Fire Department (S.F.D.) with the help of the West Salem Kiwanis and West Salem Key Club delivered food and toys to over 30 families.

On Monday, December 23rd, the Salem Fire Department (S.F.D.) with the help of the West Salem Kiwanis and West Salem Key Club delivered food and toys to over 30 families.

Families were excited to see the fire engines pull up with a big bag of food and toys.

Over 20 off-duty fire fighters and member of the Kiwanis assisted in delivering the food.

All the children had a chance to sit in the fire engines and ask questions of the fire fighters.

Deputy Chief Tom Nelson stated, "Helping our community is what Salem Fire Department is all about."

He went on to say "Salem Fire Fighters don't forget about their community when they leave the fire station at the end of their shift.

This group of men and woman donate their time on a regular basis to make Salem a better place to live."

Last year fire fighters delivered toys and food to 10 families.

This year over 30 families were assisted and next year we could assist approximately 100 families.

Fire Fighters also assisted in providing payment of electrical bills to 3 families that requested help.

Toys were provided by generous donations that the Fire Department received during the Fire Department Celebrity Toy Drive and Local organizations and private citizens also donated the money for food and electrical payments.
