On Jan. 13, the members of the Charleston Fire Department responded to Interstate 64 west bound for a reported fuel tanker fire.
Upon arrival of the first due unit’s they found a partially involved diesel fuel tanker. The main body of fire was in the drive train of the vehicle and upon discovering that the tank was empty, an aggressive fire attack was initiated.

Upon arrival of the first due unit’s they found a partially involved diesel fuel tanker. The main body of fire was in the drive train of the vehicle and upon discovering that the tank was empty, an aggressive fire attack was initiated.
All six lanes of I 64 were shut down while the fire was extinguished. Responding unit’s included three engines, one truck, two chiefs, one ambulance, an EMS supervisor, a safety officer, and a light and air unit. Some challenges that were faced with this incident included the heavy traffic flow and the elevated lanes.
The fire was under control within 20 minutes and all traffic flow was restored.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
