An early morning fire tore through a one-story, Cape Cod-style home on Dec. 13, 2009. The Fairfield (N.J.) Fire Department was dispatched shortly before 4:00 a.m. for the report of a working fire at 42 Hollywood Ave. The initial unit on the scene confirmed a working fire and issued a full second alarm, bringing mutual aid to the scene.
The structure was reported by police to be vacant at the time. Companies initiated an aggressive attack on the interior and attempted a primary search, but were soon forced to retreat to a defensive mode as conditions rapidly deteriorated. As fire broke through the roof, the Fairfield tower was able to hit much of the main body of fire with an aerial stream. Ground crews operating hand lines on the Alpha and Charlie sides were then able to re-enter the structure to hit the remaining hot spots.
The blaze was placed under control in about two hours and companies remained on the scene until after daybreak. There were no reported injuries as of this report and the fire is under investigation.
