Newport Fire & EMS was dispatched to a MVA on November 20, 2004 at 12 noon.

Upon arrival of the EMS unit and the Assistant Chief, mutal aid was requested from Broad and Gales Creek EMS, Wildwood EMS and the County Paramedic for additional units due to having three priority 1's.

Command also requested mutal aid from Broad and Gales Creek Fire Department for additional manpower for extrication and to set up the landing zone for East Care's helicopter coming from Pitt Memorial Trauma Center.

Extrication on the pick-up truck took approximately 20-30 minutes utilizing both fire deparments and two sets of "jaws." The landing zone was set up and that patient was airlifted to a nearby hospital for multiple injuries but later passed away from injuries suffered in the accident.

The other two patients were taken by EMS units to a local hospital for treatment. The accident was a head-on collision on a two lane rural road. The accident is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and charges are pending.
