Virginia Firefighters Respond to I-81 Accidents

At 08:52 Station 2 was alerted of a vehicle accident I-81 southbound at the 167, W-2 was out the door in under 30 seconds with dispatch advising 3 vehicles involved with fire showing.

At 08:52 Station 2 was alerted of a vehicle accident I-81 southbound at the 167, W-2 was out the door in under 30 seconds with dispatch advising 3 vehicles involved with fire showing.

Arriving units found a jackknifed tractor trailer with 2 SUV's underneath the trailer with heavy fire showing from all three and several explosions from the trailer.

W-2 and E-3 lead the initial attack, with all occupants out of the vehicle. units continued to knock down the fire and then stayed on scene to assist with cleanup for over six hours. Departments from 3 counties responded with 6 companies and 6 rescue squads handling the call.

At the same time, dispatch was advising of another vehicle accident with entrapment just north of the 167 also in the southbound lane. Squad 2 and Engine 2 already enroute for the first call diverted and continued to handle the accident.

Units responding included: Wagon 2, Engine 2, Squad 2, Tanker 2, Utility 2, Hazmat 2, Engine 3, Pumper 3, Wagon 3, Glasgow Tanker 13, Attack 13, Utility 13, Natural Bridge Engine 11, Utility 11, Roanoke County Air 9, and Wagon 5, Utility 5 staffed station 3.

Rescue units included: 154, 254, 352, Squad 3, 751, 12-1, 12-2.

This incident recorded no firefighter injuries or civilian fatalities.
