Vermont American Legion Catches Fire

Sept. 23, 2009

Just after 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, the Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Company responded to a structure fire at American Legion Post 91 on Route 7 across from Creek Farm Plaza in Colchester.

Assistant Chief Sandy Ladd advised all responding units that the rear of the building was fully involved in fire. Crews entered the building and attempted to contain the fire to the rear portion. But their efforts were hampered by multiple roofs added during several renovations over the years. They allowed the fire to travel into some unburned portions of the building.

Pops were heard from exploding ammunition.

After knocking the main fire in the rear, crews cut through the roof and pulled down ceiling areas and finally stopped the fire.

Mutual aid companies from the Mallett's Bay and Milton Fire Departments were called to the scene and assisted in the efforts.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire. Two Colchester firefighters were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Colchester Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
