Fatal Accident Near Des Moines, Iowa Claims One Life

An early morning motor vehicle crash south of Des Moines killed one person and injured 2 others Monday, September 27, 2004.

Crews from the Northern Warren Fire Department were dispatched around 0730 hours for a head-on collision with reports of extrication required on Warren County Highway R 63, just south of the Des Moines city limits.

NWFD Assistant Chief Bob Stinson wasted no time in requesting mutual aid from Norwalk Fire Rescue, Des Moines F.D. and Fraser Ambulance Service while enroute to the scene.

Mercy One Helicopter, based from Mercy Hospital in Des Moines was also utilized for the air transport of a critical patient to the trauma center. Three patients were extricated and transported from the scene, with one victim succumbing to injuries the next day.

Crews worked frantically for nearly thirty minutes to free two trapped victims in opposite cars simultaneously with the help of multiple sets of extrication tools on scene. Medical teams treated the victims with IV
