At 4:35 PM, Wednesday, September 22, 2004, the Freeport VFD and Walton County EMS were dispatched to a head-on vehicle accident with entrapment.

On arrival, they found a flat bed truck that had clipped a tow truck and struck a pickup truck head-on. Two patients were readily accessible and transported to Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast.

The driver of the pickup was not so lucky. He was heavily entrapped and required significant extrication.

The South Walton Fire District (SWFD) was requested mutual aid. The second alarm brought SWFD Truck 3, Rescue 2, Chief Les Hallman, Deputy Chief Mike Kane, and Division Chief Eddie Rivers. AIRHeart 1 was requested for air transport.

Thirty minutes of coordinated effort with two hydraulic rescue tools freed the driver. He was transported to Sacred Heart Pensacola's Trauma Center in critical condition.
