House Burns in New York

A structure fire was toned out to the Smithtown Fire Department at 6:26 p.m. with the location of 32 Merrivale Drive.

The two homeowners who were in the kitchen, smelled and saw smoke coming from the second floor of the house. They evacuated the home and a neighbor called in the alarm.

Chief Timothy Murphy observed flames coming out of the roof. He signaled a working fire.

A primary and secondary hose line were immediately stretched to the front door, while roof venting operations and interior search were underway. After the fire was extinguished, overhaul operations began to make sure there was no extension.

The fire started in the attic. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Smithtown Fire Marshals office.

One Smithtown firefighter suffered minor burns and was taken to St. Catherine of Siena for treatment.

The St. James Fire Department provided coverage during the fire.
