Just before 7 AM, September 12, 2004, the Forest City (NC) Fire Department, responded to a commercial structure fire at the Big Lots on South Church Street. Arriving units reported smoke in the building and requested additional alarms.
Due to the heavy fire and smoke conditions and an unoccupied structure, interior operations were not considered except in the attached exposure where ceiling was pulled and protective hand lines were placed.
Mutual aid was received from the Rutherfordton, Sandy Mush, Hudlow, S.D.O. and Bostic Fire Departments, as well as the Rutherford Co. EMS and Rescue, the Co. Sheriff
