MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. --
A five-alarm fire swept through a church in Middleborough Monday morning.
The flames broke out at the Central Congregational Church on Webster Street just before 7 a.m.
At one point, crews thought they had the blaze contained. But the steeple reignited a short time later.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire officials said that the blaze may have started in a back wall of the building, but the cause remains under investigation.
The town's Memorial Day parade that was scheduled to step off in front of the church has been canceled.
