Illinois Bravest Battle "The World's Largest Laundromat" Fire

The Berwyn Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at "The World's Largest Laundromat" in this suburb just west of the City of Chicago.

Berwyn, IL -- Sunday, August 29, 2004 @ approximately 12:30 p.m. the Berwyn Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 6240 W. Cermak Road "The World's Largest Laundromat" in this suburb just west of the City of Chicago.

On arrival companies arrived with a heavy smoke condition and fire in this one story commercial building measuring 125' X 75'. Occupants were evacuated as firefighters went to work. A box alarm was sounded for additional help. Then the fire escalated to a 4th alarm bringing in mutual aid from about 9 different communities.

The fire spread to a two story brick taxpayer in the exposure 4 side of the building.

As the fire continued to consume this building four aerial devices, two master street devices and multiple handlines were used to bring this fire under control.

Throughout this fire there was a heavy smoke condition keeping smoke down to the ground.

The fire was brought under control in about 3 hours. No injuries were reported to firefighters or civilians.
