Two Cranston firefighters and three civilians were taken to the Trauma Center at Rhode Island Hospital after being involved in a serious MVA while Rescue 1 was enroute to a working house fire.
The crews from Station 1 had just left the firehouse and were responding to the fire on Legion Way when the Rescue was hit by a Chevy Trailblazer at the corners of Park Avenue and Warwick Avenue. The Rescue was trailing other apparatus through the intersection when they were hit. Eyewitness reports say that the rescue was spun completely around, while the Blazer went through a building on the opposite corner and came to rest on its side.
Upon seeing the accident, Engine 1 turned around and assisted at the accident scene. The incident commander notified Cranston Fire Alarm that the members on board Rescue 1 were conscious and alert but the occupants of the Blazer were heavily entrapped and would need to be cut from the car. Five additional rescues were requested to the scene as well as 2 engines, a ladder, the Special Hazards and a Battalion Chief from the Warwick Fire Department.
Crews from Cranston and Warwick worked for approximately 30 minutes to remove all of the victims from the Blazer. The extent of injuries to any of the victims is unknown at this time. Members of the Cranston Police Department's Traffic Division are investigating the accident.
