Three Injured When Tractor Trailer Crushes Pickup Truck In Delaware

Aug. 17, 2004
First arriving units found a mangled Chevy pick-up truck with a tractor trailer cab sitting on top of it in the median.

On August 11th at 15:32 hrs, Wilmington Manor Fire Company (28-32) along with ambulances from Delaware City Fire Company (15), Goodwill Fire Company (18), New Castle County Medic 2, and Trooper 4 were alerted for a serious MVC with possible entrapment at the intersection of South Dupont Highway (Route 13) and Saienni Blvd. Engine 32-5 was first to arrive at 15:37 hrs, finding a mangled Chevy pick-up truck with a tractor trailer cab sitting on top of it in the median of S.Dupont Highway. Amazingly bystanders were able to remove the driver of the pick-up from his vehicle prior to the arrival of fire and EMS personnel.

The crew from 32-5 began treating the injured driver until the arrival of ambulance A-32 and Medic 2. After the Chevy had been rear-ended by the 18 wheeler it had been pushed into another truck that was in front of it. Both occupants of that truck fortunately received only minor injuries. They were treated and transported to Christiana ER by ambulances B-15 and A-18. The driver of the Chevy received leg, back and head injuries and was transported to Christiana ER by A-32 and Medic 2 in serious condition. 28-8B (Phibbs) had command and placed the scene under control at 16:43 hrs. The Northbound lanes of S.Dupont Highway were closed for several hours for clean up and investigation. All fire department units were clear the scene by 17:05 hrs.

Units on scene: A-32, 32-5, Rescue 28, A-18, B-15, Medic 2, Trooper 4, DSP, DELDOT, and Wilmington Manor Fire Police.
