Virginia Firefighters Respond to Structure Fire

Feb. 2, 2009
The fire was accidental.

At approx 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, Fairfax County 9-1-1 received several calls reporting a large structure fire at the Shell gas station located at 6660 Arlington Blvd. There were initial reports that the pumps were possibly involved. A foam task force was added to the box.

First arriving units found a garage attached to a gas station store fully involved with heavy fire from sides A and C. They requested a second alarm, and went to work trying to fight the fire back into the building protecting the pumps that were not involved.

Due to heavy structural damage, the attack was defensive. Command placed ladder pipes from Truck 106 Towers 430 and 408 in service bringing the fire under control. Three people were transported for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Damage is estimated at $258,000. According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A dropped shop light too close to fuel vapors caused the fire.
